Saving and investing with ETFs

Growing your wealth cost-effectively

VZ selects ETFs and index funds independently, as it doesn't offer any investment products of its own. You choose the investment strategy that suits your goals and your risk appetite and decide how much and how often you wish to invest. If you already have experience with investments, you can also build and manage your portfolio yourself.

Key questions and answers on saving and investing with ETFs

  • How does an ETF savings plan work?

When you invest in an ETF or another index fund, you're buying a share in an entire stock market index, for example the SMI. Index funds aim to replicate an index one to one. If the index rises, the value of the index fund also increases.

If you want to regularly set money aside for a long-term financial goal, saving and investing with ETFs is the ideal solution. You decide when and how much to invest and how you wish to allocate your investments across the various asset classes. VZ selects the best ETFs and index funds for you.

Deposits and withdrawals are processed free of charge in line with the weekly investment cycle. If you wish to make deposits or withdrawals outside these times, transaction fees will be charged in accordance with VZ Depository Bank's current e-banking fee schedule.

  • When is the right time to start investing?

You can start at any time – regardless of the current market environment. Naturally, some times are better than others for making an investment. But if you invest an amount at regular intervals, regardless of the current price, you'll acquire more fund units when prices are low and fewer when prices are high. In this way, good and bad times to invest balance each other out over the years, resulting in a favourable average price.

  • Which securities can I invest in?

Experienced investors can put together a portfolio consisting of up to 12 asset classes, including Swiss equities, international bonds, real estate and commodities. For each asset class, you can select an index fund or an ETF from a carefully vetted list of securities.

VZ continuously analyses index funds and the ETFs traded on SIX Swiss Exchange and offers what it considers to be the most attractive solutions. As we are an independent financial service provider with no investment products of our own, we can ensure that our selection process is impartial and carried out solely in the best interests of our clients.

  • How do I find the right ETFs or index funds?

At VZ, we look for the best ETFs and other index funds for you. As an independent financial service provider with no products of our own, we ensure that all securities are analysed and assessed without any conflict of interest. The historical returns and volatility of the underlying index are important considerations when choosing an index fund.

    The process is as follows:

    • Together with the investment specialists at VZ, you'll decide on a strategy that sets out the allocations to be invested in different asset classes such as shares and bonds. The strategy is by far the most important factor for investment success and must be in line with your risk capacity and financial goals.
    • We then determine which market and index to invest in, such as the SMI, the Swiss blue-chip index, and the SMIM, the Swiss index for mid-sized companies.
    • Investors at VZ can adjust their investment strategy at any time using the e-banking solution VZ Financial Portal. You can change the weightings of the asset classes and replace securities. These adjustments are free of charge as part of the weekly rebalancing of the portfolio.

You can determine the investment strategy yourself in the VZ Financial Portal. We’ll help you in this process with a questionnaire. The answers you give to the questions will result in an investment recommendation, which you can, of course, override. Here's what you need to bear in mind when defining your investment strategy.
