Description

(AWP Alliance News) - Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc on Friday announced new interim data on its Alyftrek cystic fibrosis treatment.

The Boston, Massachusetts-based biopharmaceutical firm highlighted the recovery of exocrine pancreatic function in some children aged two to five years old, "allowing those children to discontinue pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy".

"Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency in children with cystic fibrosis...was previously believed to be irreversible," added Vertex.

These data were presented as a late breaker poster at the North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Vertex noted that the data covered 48 children enrolled in a pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy discontinuation substudy, an ongoing open-label extension study of Alyftrek.

"For decades, pancreatic organ failure and resulting exocrine pancreatic insufficiency has been accepted as an irreversible consequence of CF, but these remarkable data in younger children treated with Alyftrek show that, in fact, pancreatic failure can be reversed," said Carmen Bozic, executive vice president of Global Medicines Development and Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at Vertex.

Vertex shares closed up 1.4% at USD510.08 each in New York on Friday.
