United Utilities progresses on Manchester Ship Canal project

(AWP Alliance News) - United Utilities Group PLC on Friday said it reached a key construction milestone in its effort to improve water quality at the Manchester Ship Canal.

"United Utilities has made significant upgrades to its Warrington South wastewater treatment facility to improve the quality of the treated water that is returned to the environment at the end of the treatment process," the company said in a statement.

All major civil works at the site are now complete, with full completion set for in the Autumn, following electrical installations.

The Warrington-based water company is investing over GBP17 million on the scheme.

Bellhouse Lane, Halton, is one of the first sites in the UK to integrate mobile organic biofilm technology into its processes, United Utilities said, helping improve the quality of treated wastewater and increasing production capacity.

"We are always looking at new and innovative ways to treat wastewater in the North West and improve water quality in rivers, lakes, and seas across the region," said Maria Fletcher, county business lead for wastewater in Cheshire.

"MOB technology is both exciting and efficient, and we look forward to seeing how these upgrades benefit our county."

The company plans to spend more than GBP13 billion over the next five years to protect and enhance over 500 kilometres of rivers, lakes, and bathing waters.

United Utilities shares closed up 0.6% at 1,436.00 pence in London on Friday.
