Uber Freight eyes European logistics growth with new Polish facility

Description

(AWP Alliance News) - Uber Technologies Inc on Tuesday outlined plans to grow its logistics business in Europe.

The San Francisco, California-based ride-hailing and courier service provider operates a subsidiary called Uber Freight.

It is looking to to expand its European fourth-party logistics offering by investing in the region and opening a second European location in Krakow, Poland in 2027.

"The investment builds on momentum with Uber Freight's North American customers, many of which also operate in Europe and are looking to work with fewer logistics partners across their global operations. As Uber Freight grows those relationships in North America, its European business creates an opportunity to do more for the same customers, while also winning new business in the region," Uber said on Tuesday.

"Chemicals are an early focus for growth," the company added.

It cited a report which put the value of the European road freight market in the region of EUR440 billion.

The company has also appointed Mike Doucleff to lead European business. Doucleff will report directly to Rebecca Tinucci, chief executive of Uber Freight.

Doucleff, who joins Uber Freight on September 28, previously worked at Schneider Electric SE, and most recently led the US market entry for Alpitronic, a European manufacturer of high-performance electric vehicle fast-charging systems.

Uber Freight already has fourth-party logistics operations in the Netherlands, which became part of the business through the acquisition of Transplace. It noted that this segment of the business is separate from the European freight brokerage unit it sold in 2020.

"Logistics is global by nature, but too often it's managed through disconnected partners and regional silos. The more of that complexity we can bring together, the simpler and more efficient it becomes for customers to run their global supply chains. That's the opportunity we see in Europe," Tinucci said.

Uber shares were up 0.7% to USD71.36 during pre-market trade on Tuesday in New York.
