Description

(AWP Alliance News) - Uber Technologies Inc on Tuesday reported a fresh acquisition in the catering sector for USD2.3 billion cash.

The San Francisco-based ride-hailing services and food delivery company has entered an agreement to buy ezCater, which Uber described as "a leading US platform for catering and workplace meals".

Uber shares were up 0.5% during pre-market trade at USD69.84 each on Tuesday in New York.

ezCater's gross bookings for the trailing twelve months total about USD2.5 billion, Uber said, with annual growth in the high teens and average order values above the USD400 mark.

According to Uber, ezCater "is profitable on a Non-GAAP operating income basis, and is expected to be margin accretive".

"Catering is a big business, and can be a huge revenue stream for restaurants," said Uber Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi.

"[ezCater CEO] Nihad [Rahman] and his incredible team have built an amazing platform. With Uber's reach, we can bring that experience to millions more customers and help restaurants win more of these valuable orders," Khosrowshahi added.

The deal is expected to close "in the coming months", conditional on regulatory clearance.

It follows the deal Uber announced in July, to acquire Berlin-based food delivery firm Delivery Hero SE for for EUR41.50 per share, representing an implied equity value of USD14.8 billion. The equity value is USD13.7 billion adjusted for Uber's prior stake purchases.

The San Francisco-based ride-hailing services and food delivery company holds a stake of 24.99% in Delivery Hero, with a further 11.8% held via instruments.

In September, Delivery Hero recommended shareholders accept Uber's bid. Prosus NV, which owns around 16.8% of Delivery Hero, has also indicated its support.

The offer, which is open until November 5, requires an acceptance level of at least 50% to proceed.
