European stock movers in focus:
----------
HSBC Holdings, down 7.0% at 1,269.60p, 12-month range 979.80p-1,610.00p. The Asia-focused, London-based bank says pretax profit jumped 32% to USD9.63 billion in the three months ended September 30 from USD7.30 billion a year earlier. Profit falls just short of company-compiled consensus of USD9.70 billion. HSBC maintains its third-quarter dividend at USD0.10 per share and announces plans for a new USD1 billion share buyback programme, which it aims to complete by its 2026 results.
----------
Mercedes-Benz Group, down 4.3% at EUR39.60, 12-month range EUR38.89-EUR62.34. The Stuttgart, Germany-based carmaker cuts its annual guidance, now seeing earnings before interest and tax "at the prior-year level" of EUR5.82 billion. It previously expected an outcome "significantly above" this. "In addition to an increasingly challenging market environment in China, Mercedes-Benz Group expects higher costs in the fourth quarter, including higher material costs," the carmaker explains. It releases earnings for the third quarter on Wednesday.
----------
Beiersdorf, down 4.0% at EUR79.74, 12-month range EUR67.08-EUR110.15. The personal care products company says third quarter group sales rise 0.4% to EUR2.36 billion, but decline 1.3% organically. Net sales at Nivea alone slide 4.9%. "Nivea continued to be impacted by temporary sell-in headwinds," Beiersdorf says.
----------
Novartis, up 1.7% at CHF129.62, 12-month range CHF97.05-CHF132.68. It lifts its annual profit guidance despite a fall in third-quarter profit, partly due to a near USD2 billion hit from a disappointing drug trial result. The pharmaceutical company says net income in the third quarter of 2026 plunges 70% to USD1.20 billion from USD3.93 billion a year prior. At constant currency, the fall is 71%. Net sales, however, are 4.4% higher a USD14.52 billion from USD13.91 billion. Constant currency sales growth is 4%, the Basel, Switzerland-based firm says. Higher research and development expenses keep a lid on profit, including a USD1.9 billion partial impairment charge related to the del-desiran asset. Novartis now sees low single-digit core operating income growth for the full year. Its prior view was for a low-single-digit percentage decline. Core operating income in 2025 rose 12% to USD21.89 billion. In the third quarter, core operating income is 11% higher on-year at USD6.04 billion. The core profit measure excludes one-off items, so the UD1.9 billion del-desiran impairment is not included.
