Holcim launches new clay production line at Czech facility

(AWP Alliance News) - Holcim AG on Thursday said it has launched a new clay production line at its Cizkovice plant.

The Zug, Switzerland-based building materials company said the facility will enable it to supply 580,000 tonnes of EcoPlanet low-carbon cement to customers each year.

The production line is the first of its type in the Czech Republic, the firm said.

Holcim said the line has an annual capacity of 115,000 tonnes of calcined clay, which will be sourced from its local quarry. The use of calcined clay reduces the cement's carbon footprint by around 30%.

It added that the new line is Holcim Czech Republic's largest ever investment at CHF40 million, or USD49.3 million.

Xavier Guesnu, region head of Central and East Europe, said: "The commissioning of this new calcined clay line is an important step for Holcim to scale up next generation ECOPlanet low-carbon cement as an innovative solution to meet our customers' most ambitious goals, as the leading partner for sustainable construction."

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said: "This project is proof that Czech industry can be modern, competitive and environmentally responsible at the same time. This is exactly the kind of investment our country needs."

Shares in Holcim closed down 1.4% at CHF70.98 on Wednesday afternoon in Zurich.
