(AWP Alliance News) - E.ON SE on Wednesday said it has been awarded a contract alongside Autobahn Tank & Rast Gruppe GmbH & Co KG to build and operate charging infrastructure in Germany for battery-electric trucks.
E.ON, an Essen, Germany-based electric utility company, secured the contract as part of the German government's Deutschlandnetz tender.
No financial details of have been disclosed.
"The project is part of a publicly supported initiative to establish a high-performance charging network along Germany's motorways, creating the conditions for reliable, fast and economically viable charging of electric trucks on long-distance routes," E.ON commented.
The contract covers 195 charging points across 24 locations with E.ON and Bonn, Germany-based motorway services provider Tank & Rast each responsible for half of the sites.
The first location is scheduled to go live in 2027, with 101 megawatt charging points set to be deployed.
This charging infrastructure will also be accompanied with 32 combined charging system charging points with an output of 400 kilowatts to provide a flexible option during shorter stops, along with 62 CCS charging points with an output of 150 kilowatts for cost-efficient charging during longer periods and for overnight use.
Work being carried out under the contract also covers technical components including grid connections, transformer stations, information technology connectivity and reservation systems.
Timo Sillober, chief executive officer of E.ON Drive Infrastructure, said: "The electrification of passenger cars has shown that once infrastructure is in place, the market follows. For electric trucks, we are building exactly this foundation.
"As a pan-European operator across eleven countries, we bring both the experience and the network. From 2027, we will expand our truck charging network to key motorway corridors in Germany, providing the right charging capacity for every operational scenario."
These additional charging points will add to E.ON Drive Infrastructure's existing network of over 9,000 public charging points.
E.ON shares closed down 2.0% at EUR17.66 each in Frankfurt on Wednesday.
