(AWP Alliance News) - Alcon Inc and RxSight Inc on Monday announced a non-exclusive license agreement for the development and commercialisation of novel post-operative light adjustable presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses.
Under the collaboration, the companies will innovate on their respective platforms - RxSight's post-operative light-adjustable technology and Alcon's PCIOL optical designs - and combine them to create a co-developed technology that enables surgeons to fine-tune visual outcomes for their cataract patients who choose a PCIOL.
As part of the agreement, Aliso Viejo, California-based RxSight will receive a USD60 million upfront payment to begin development. RxSight could receive up to an additional USD140 million in payments as development and regulatory milestones are met.
Under the agreement, Geneva, Switzerland-based eye-care products company Alcon will lead global commercialisation, while RxSight will be responsible for development and manufacturing and receive royalties on net sales.
"Our leading PCIOLs have helped millions of patients reduce or eliminate the need for glasses after cataract surgery," said David Endicott, chief executive officer of Alcon. "Together with RxSight's technology, we have the opportunity to develop tunable PCIOLs, giving surgeons even greater confidence to refine outcomes after surgery."
Alcon closed down 0.2% at CHF54.94 in Zurich on Monday.
